Project: Ancient Insights into the Causes and Prevention of War and their Relevance Today

The age of Greek antiquity was an age of quarrel and war. Homer’s epic Iliad is set during the Trojan war. In the 5th century BCE, the Greeks achieved legendary victories against the Persians at Marathon and Salamis. The Greek city-states also fought each other constantly, most notably in the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta and their allies. The Doric Sparta was a militarized polis that resembled an army camp.

Against this background, it is not surprising that the ancient Greek thinkers were able to gain significant insights into the causes and prevention of war. This research project analyzes these insights and aims to draw lessons for today. Although Plato and Aristotle considered certain forms of war to be legitimate, they ultimately had a pacifist attitude. What insights into the internal organization and policies of states that can prevent warlike aspirations against neighbors do ancient thinkers offer to the unabatedly war-plagued present?
